We're jamming, jamming - And I hope you like jamming too I have maybe 5+ fairly 'good' tunes that are not complete that thend to sit on my drive and never get finished. Some of these tunes have been there for more than a year.
Yet, I still listen to them. Not only that, but it seems they serve more as interactive listening since I find myself filling in the missing parts as I'm listening.
For example - I have a tune w/ just drums and a bassline played on my bass. It's fairly solid on it's own, but it has all kinds of 'room' since there aren't any other instruments in the mix. Since there's no melody or chord progression or decorative elements, I'm free to create them both in my mind and by singing out the parts I hear in my mind.
I'm finding this "cognitive karaoke" to be a fun way to pass a few minutes - a way to explore a song before commiting it to a recording, and a way to simply enjoy music more.
In some cases, this leads to plugging in a guitar and jamming along, but even here - I tend to feel like the music is serving a function as opposed to being a desired outcome. I might even record a few jams - but in the end, I keep closing the project and leaving it at just drums and bass.
Maybe this is just jamming withdrawl? That I need to jump into some local jams? Yeah - I'd love to do that. I have a enough friends and friends of friends to get something going - but it might be enlightning to jam with some strangers.
Do you jam? Have you hit flow? Do you know what I'm talking about? :)
Flow, in terms of Jamming, is the point where you cease to actaully be playing - that the music is locked in so well that the jam itself is playing you. It's the point where you are no longer thinking, where movements, listening and feeling are focused without effort. It's like sky-diving, or skiing down a silent mountain at high velocity.
Certainly, one can 'Jam' within all sorts of contexts - with various types of media. I would like to see Jamming grow as a concept, as an approach - as it's a healthy mehtodology to apply to anything.
But what is jamming? I would define it as: "An effortless utilization of resources in an improvisational manner which serves to feed a focus, and is often achieved through creative means."
Hmmm... sounds good doesn't it? Don't you think everyone should be jamming... on something?
You don't have to jam with music - you can jam w/ video or text or cooking or with your sport or your workout. The key here, is to bring in the principles of jamming, to apply them to your lifestyle, your work and your play.
And to close this out, I'll leave you with some of the lyris to "We're Jammin" by Bob Marley.
We're jamming I wanna jam it with you, We're jamming, jamming And I hope you like jamming too
Ain't no rules, ain't no vow, we can do it anyhow I and I will see you through, 'Cos every day we pay the price with a little sacrifice Jamming till the jam is through.
We're jamming To think that jamming was a thing of the past, We're jamming, jamming And I hope this jam is gonna last
