A Year Ago Today... It was a year ago today that I made that harsh decision to partially close down ElectronicScene.com.
We had less than 100 paying members. Bandwidth was covered by the fees. Traffic was climbing at such a rapid rate - the server just choked. We had no money saved up to cover upgrades. I couldn't afford to put the investment into the upgrades.
Let me tell you... it was a very stressful time - and an extreemly difficult decision to make.
But - as you know, this isn't something you can just turn on - this is huge - and there's so much potential - so I had to continue.
============ The next few months, I didn't work on the site - gave my mind a mental vacation from all of it - spent time learning 3D modeling and working in the Unreal game engine. And to ease me into this transition, I had a nice family vacation right after closing the site.
This work - this site - the music - all of you - it's something that is now a part of me, and you just can't ignore your dreams, otherwise, they'll turn into doubts and wonders. You have a dream - go for it. Do it. Fail. Succeed. Just do it.
It didn't take long, and my mind and heart wandered back to this project - this site - the music - and all of you. Back in October, I poped open my ToDo list - reorganized it, raised the sails, and headed off into the sea.
Since then, I've added over 70 upgrades, additions and new tools to the site. I've been fixing issues, making the site easier to use, adding value for listeners/fans - and keeping my eye of the pulse of new trends in media.
Here we are - a year later, and the site unfortunately still not relaunched. I'm sure that people are angry, upset, or that they gave up on the site - but I'm also very aware of the people out there that are very excited about the site and how things are forming.
You may be wondering and thinking, "Gideon should have had enough time now to relaunch the services." - and yes, you are correct. But this isn't as easy as it may seem. While I could have focused more on simply getting the new hardware inplace to handle more users, etc - I've selected to instead focus on the site, the services, the tools, and adding things to the site that you just don't find on other sites.
There's dozens of music sites out there - and while you and I may agree that ArtistServer is the best - we need to make sure that most people out there feel the same. There needs to be a difference between us and them - there needs to be some distance so people will not have a difficult time making a choice.
I don't want to go down again - I want the next step to be on solid ground.
We are still here. We never left. We doing it our own way.
I love you guys and gals - and you music - thank you so much for sharing and participating.
