Virtual Concerts, 3D Events and SecondLife
I've been checking out SecondLife - it's a 3d game/world where you can basically do 3d design and scripting within the world - you can create objects - assign scripts to them, stream music, video, design your avatar - your clothes, etc.

I'll have more about the service later - but the idea I wanted to chat about here, is throwing Virtual Concerts.

SecondLife allows you to own 'land' in the game. A common thing people do there, is create 'clubs' - and they DJ music online and it streams into the game. So you can have a shoutcast stream going and everyone can hear it in the game. The people at the club all have dancing animations and can chat, etc. It's an 18+ environment - so some of these clubs are even 'adult' oriented.

How much does it cost to join? A 1 time fee of $9.95 and you are good to go. There are other options - which include 'land' - but I don't want to get into that here.

So - these virtual concerts... this is how it would work.

1. Some people build a 3D club/concert hall on some 'land' in the game for the shows

2. set up an account with a shoutcast streaming service - one where you can stream from a remote location to their service

3. the concerts - the artist/band that was going to perform would have to have a high bandwidth connection to be considered. When it came time for that person's show - they'd need to perform at their location, and pipe it into their PC - not somehting everyone can pull off - which might make this a bit difficult. They'd also need an Avatar/character in the game to represent them. The best way to do this, is having 2 teams - one performs, the other controls the Avatars for the artists - trying to get them to move about along w/ the music. You'd have some keyboards, etc 3D designed on the stage - so people wouldn't need their own virtual equipment - or they can have their own.

4. I believe you can even sell tickets in-game, and limit access in some way - actually, with their scripting, a lot of things are possible. This leads to the the option of even covering your streaming expenses by charging people to get into the show. SecondLife has it's own currency which you can cash out - yes, people are making a living in these 3D worlds.

Hopefully that made some sense, and will get your wheels turning. I'm not sure if this has much value - but I do see it as something that "will" happen on the Web, maybe not in SecondLife - but somewhere, we will start seeing "virtual concerts" which allow people from all over the world to experience a concert they can't get to.

The large-scale commercial application of this would actually be done live - with real bands performing. Each member would wear a MoCap suit (motion capture) or at least have 6-12 sensors placed on their bodies - then along with the audio being streamed, the captured motion would also be streamed and on the users screen, they'd see the concert... virtually.

In the future, I'm speculating that this will also become a way to "Record" concerts - so you'd do the very same thing - but it would go to disc - and when you open it up again, not only would you be able to watch... but you'd be able to move around the concert - sit where you want - even see what it looks like through the singer's eyes.

We are less than 5 years away from this is my guess - the technology is out there - it's just not pulled together into this type of focus. I have a feeling that this is actually a business opportunity where a company could be launched that offered this service 'live event or concert capturing' in 3D.

This way - people could always go to see their favorite concert... from any seat in the house.

If you are thinking... 3D kinda sucks - well, take a look at the 2007 version of the Unreal Technology engine - the realism is amazing: http://www.unrealtechnology.com/html/technology/ue30.shtml - these are indeed screenshots... but they are 'in game' they are not 3D renderings from a 3D package. SICK!!!
